Data Day 3

The Institute of Mathematics (ÚMAT) and the Institute of Informatics (ÚINF) with the support of IT Valley Košice once again organized the third DataDay in a row, which took place on March 18, 2023. It is an event for data enthusiasts who want to enrich their knowledge with new information and gain new experience. On this day, a large number of high school and university students visited the UPJŠ Faculty of Science.

The DataDay started with an introductory lecture by keyspeaker Stanislav Hrivňak, a graduate of PF UPJŠ. Stano, as someone who has many years of experience with data and artificial intelligence, shared with the participants his know-how on how to look for opportunities for employment in today’s world. After the introductory lecture, participants could take part in 5 workshops where they could try working with data themselves:

  • The workshop “On the tracks of dinosaurs with a Greek bandit” showed the participants how mathematics with informatics helps biologists uncover the mysteries of dinosaur evolution and how to use these methods in other applications in everyday life.
  • At “Neural Networks Interactive”, participants taught a neural network to recognize objects and understood how a neural network can determine what is on the picture.
  • “Digital Forensics from a Data Analyst’s Point of View” explained to everyone the work of a forensic analyst whose task is to find out the cause of a cyber security incident in the Windows operating system.
  • Physicists were fascinated by the topic “Analysis of data at the Large Hadron Collider”, which was devoted to the smallest elements such as quarks and gluons, the investigation of which requires the analysis of a large amount of data and hundreds of thousands of computers.
  • The role of empirical probability in machine learning was discussed at the workshop “Understanding the role of empirical probability in data science”.

In addition to workshops, accompanying activities were also prepared for the participants, among which there was no shortage of flying a drone around obstacles, or a quiz with the opportunity to win interesting prizes.
